AN INTRODUCTION

As we welcome a new year in our new era in Sudan, we want to work harder to realise our foremost aspirations of Freedom, Peace, and Justice. Citizen Science is consistent with the citizenship state we want to build because it is about public participation in the production of knowledge that supports decision making in matters that impact our lives. With this backdrop, we want to invite you to the second and final part of the Citizen Science Series that started with a symposium in November 2019.

In your preparation for PART 2 that will take place on the 25th January and 1st February 2020, please refer to the symposium’s blog to get acquainted with the topics we covered on the concepts and applications of Citizen Science.  This is because we intend in this final part of the series to support you in implementing these concepts for a citizen science application of your choice. This could be a research project you are doing for your degree, or about a project your group runs or is planning, or an idea you have for solving a problem of national significance, etc. At base, you should come to this event with a purpose, that to accomplish, you need the power of the crowd.

During these two Saturdays, we will help you through your Citizen Science project development experience in three ways. First, we will work with you to frame your ideas into a scientific piece of research where knowledge is produced and citizens are engaged. Second, we will delve into the data that is required by your project to develop a data preparation and processing model that assures its quality, access, and use. Third, we will draw together on project management practice to establish your project plan. There are additional skills with relevance to citizen science projects that are weaved into this hands-on experience, such as photography, web-based applications, knowledge management. There are also values upheld by citizen science projects that we will deliberate, such as ethics of participatory research, open science. By the end of Part 2, participants will have developed a solid understanding and prototype of their citizen science project that they can take forward into completion.

To participate in Citizen Science Part 2, we need to know about your ideas to prepare for working with you on your project. Please fill this participation form (available until 11 January 2010).
